Behind the Project: Perforated Vinyl Installation at Parkland High School

At JKS Incorporated, we believe that great graphics should do more than just look good–they should solve problems, too. One of our latest projects at Parkland High School in Winston-Salem is a perfect example of how thoughtfully designed graphics can improve both the safety and appearance of a space.

Parkland High School Project Overview

Our recent work at Parkland High School has included a variety of branding, wayfinding, and security enhancements across campus, including:

  • Perforated window vinyl at the front entrance
  • Perforated window vinyl on the main office windows
  • Custom hallway wall graphics
  • Branded entrance rugs and mats
  • Pole banners
  • Directional and campus road signs
  • Program display materials (like custom banners and table covers) for the school’s International Baccalaureate (IB) program
  • Freshman stairwell graphics.

Each installation serves a unique purpose, but together they add to a cohesive campus environment.

Signage Solutions With Added Security

Perforated window film has been the standout material of this project and we continue to see it grow in popularity among schools for both its practical benefits and visual impact.

Looking out of Parkland High School’s front entrance. Perforated window film provides optimal visibility from inside the building.

Perforated window film creates an added layer of security by making it much more difficult for people outside of a building to see in, all while still allowing those inside to maintain excellent visibility looking out. In a school environment, that visibility can make a meaningful difference.

At Parkland High School, the perforated graphics also eliminated the need to rely on bulky window treatments for privacy in the main office. Plus, in an emergency situation, staff can simply turn off the lights instead of spending time lowering multiple sets of blinds.

Perforated window film is also a great way to bring color and branding to the front of an otherwise unimpressionable school building. Instead of plain glass, vibrant graphics featuring the school’s colors, mascot, and branding create a welcoming entrance that reflects Parkland High School’s identity.

Another major advantage is affordability. For schools working with limited budgets for projects that enhance campus culture and appearance, perforated window film provides a more cost-effective way to make a significant visual impact. It’s one of those solutions that delivers a lot of value with relatively few resource–something every school district can appreciate.

Behind the Scenes: Installation Day

So what goes into installation day when working with perforated vinyl graphics? The day starts with thorough prep work.

If we’re working with clean glass, we’ll prepare the surface using isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth to remove any remaining dust, oil, or grime. If existing graphics, tape, or glue residue, we’ll carefully scrape the surface clean, use an adhesive remover where necessary, and finish with another alcohol wipe-down to leave the glass spotless.

Once the windows are prepped and ready, each contour cut perforated panel is positioned using the window mullions for alignment, trimmed for a precise fit, and applied using a leather squeegee. Like most vinyl products, perforated film installs best in moderate temperatures and dry conditions to help ensure a smooth finish and long-lasting performance.
